| | | Spotty Sparrowhawks? Saw this sparrowhawk in the garden this morning.
None of the sparrowhawks in my books have the spots on their wings. Is this a juvenile bird or is it just natural variation? |

| | | Re: Spotty Sparrowhawks? Both of these are first winter Sparrowhawks, shown by the extensive narrow rufous edges to the upperpart feathers.
The 'white spots' that can be seen on both are not an indication of the age, they are simply exposed feather bases, which are white. This are sometimes exposed (presumably because the bird has moulted or lost some feathers, or feathers are out of place), and this can also sometimes be seen in adult birds.
