| | | Hunting barn owl at dusk I have just been told of a pair of barn owls on a nearby farm.
I went there yesterday afternoon and watched one on patrol.
Here are three shots showing it trying for a kill. It was pretty gloomy by then but that helped to make the pictures atmospheric (IMHO)
Unfortunately, it was unsuccessful.
Not long after that, the second bird came on the scene before they both left for pastures new.
A magic bird.

| | | Re: Hunting barn owl at dusk Marvellous stuff. I saw (along with Dave and John) 3 hunting at once on Sunday afternoon which was amazing to see. No photos as good as yours though! |

| | | Re: Hunting barn owl at dusk Lovely pics, I was reading online that wildlife artist Richard Fuller, East Yorks has found 24 dead ones due to the bad weather & he was trying to encourage people to put up boxes for them. The aritcle is here & quite interesting. BBC - Wildlife artist's crusade to save Wolds barn owls
It's a pity you cant buy dead mice & supplement the owls like you can the other birds.

| | | Re: Hunting barn owl at dusk Quite a shame, they had a poor breeding season too. I have worked with this group in the past as a lot of my work is carried out in that region, even ring some of the chicks. Its not just nest boxes but also provision of suitable rough grassland for field voles, thankfully HLS and farmers have helped. They seem to have been less affected along the coast here I had upto 7 birds at/around flamborough the other day.
Nice photo's Colin. looks like the male. |

| | | Re: Hunting barn owl at dusk Nice shots Colin
I saw 4 within a 3/4 mile on Sunday evening on my way back from Welney plus a further 3 (and a Short-eared Owl) on the Norfolk coast on Monday....but sadly didn't manage to get any pics of any of them

| | | Re: Hunting barn owl at dusk great shots. the dark background really makes them stand out. i'm so jealous.
Such a pity that this enigmatic bird is going through such a bad patch.
