| | | A strange night call. Hi,
During the night I have been hearing a bird calling that I haven't noticed before. We have tawny owls nearby so I know their calls very well, I don't think it is one of them.
It tends to call twice, then nothing for long periods, then twice again. It can be in the early hours, or just before the dawn chorus starts up.
It sounds like a cross between a pheasant and a turkey. I have no idea what it is. Does anyone have any ideas?

| | | Re: A strange night call. Foxes are actively calling at night at the moment. Its a really shrill shriek, and can be mistaken for a bird call. Have a listen to the sounds here The Fox Forest
The territorial call is the one I am thinking of, but the summonding yell one is similar. |

| | Re: A strange night call. Hi All,
Thanks very much for the suggestions.
It is definately not a partridge so I can rule that one out.
Thanks for the Forest Fox link. We do have a lot of urban foxes around here. I see and hear them a lot and they often come through my garden.
I thought I'd heard all their calls over the years but there were a few new ones to me on the suggested website.
The one labelled 'calling for a mate' sounds pretty close, especially the second part of the recording, so it could be that and not a bird at all!
I will be listening out for it.
Thanks again,
Bo. |

My friend and I heard a fox on Friday night and I now know it was a warning call. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
