| | | Kestrel and lesser spotted woody I was on a ponder earlier in the day on how you can tell the difference between the calls of a kestrel and a lesser spotted woody.
I went on the rspb site and listened to examples and found a slight difference.great i thought , but then i tried some examples on the xeno- canto bird song website, to which some of the examples sounded very simular.

| | | Re: Kestrel and lesser spotted woody Ha ha, they're great these very similar calls aren't they. All I can suggest is practise, practise, practise, listening to them both side by side over and over again if you are having difficulties. I did this with garden warbler and blackcap and to a lesser extent, sedge and reed warbler. I like to think I'm pretty much sorted with them now, but probably still get it wrong sometimes.

| | | Re: Kestrel and lesser spotted woody To my ears, the Kestrel is lower in tone and the note is more complex (wheezier/scratchier/squeekier). Bit like an asthmatic version of the Woodpecker. What do you think?
