| | | Red Kites, Are they spreading well?? Hi all.
It seems to me that the Red Kite population is spreading well, I certainly seem to be seeing them further afield than I used to. Is this because they're travelling further from release sites or are breeding pairs actually spreading out?

| | | Re: Red Kites, Are they spreading well?? Don't know about them spreading in south west Scotland but they are certainly increasing at Bellymack Hill farm.
Wish they would stop wing tagging them now. |

| | | Re: Red Kites, Are they spreading well?? In Norfolk in 2009 there was two confirmed breeding pairs with a total of four young fledged with a possible third pair breeding at another site. First confirmed norfolk breeding records for about 160 years. |

| | | Re: Red Kites, Are they spreading well?? I often see them circling when I travel down from the Midlands to visit my dad, who lives in Berkshire, as we pass through Watlington. They have built a high bird table in the middle of their garden and put dead things/meat on it. Before long the Kites swoop down for it and it is only about 7m away - amazing!

They're now so common in the the Chilterns that you can say that any biggish bird you see in the sky is going to be a kite. They seem to be more common than crows and certainly are far more common than buzzards.

| | | Re: Red Kites, Are they spreading well?? I didn't see this myself but one of my volunteering colleagues saw 15 Red Kites down on Gower over the Christmas break. I regularly see a Red Kite up here and I live on a massive Council Estate in Swansea.
It's good to hear that they are spreading well across the rest of the UK as well as Wales.
Personally I still get a thrill at whatever Raptor I see. Buzzards are incredibly common down here, but I still can't help getting excited when I hear their cry or see them perched as I drive past.
cheers
