As usual a beautiful photo. It makes a change from the usual "robins in winter" photos.
I wish you would give me some photography lessons!

..i've had up to six goldfinches and several greenfinches. however, i noticed the niger seed that was falling to the ground was starting to grow. i moved the niger feeder to the patio and have since noticed no visitors. i'm using a niger seed feeder with tray, but can't see a way of having seed not fall and growing... any of you have the same problem or a solution ?

Thanks for any replies
BWD | I started this thread in the middle of January, and I thought I would let you know that the number of goldfinches in my garden has now doubled. Yes we have two goldfinches visiting the feeding station nearly everyday. At the current rate we expect to have a small flock by the summer of 2010!!

| | | Re: Goldfinch Coincidentally we unexpectedly had two at the niger feeder in the rain yesterday - at least briefly, then one chased the other away. I'll never have a flock at this rate! |

| | | Re: Goldfinch Hi Billy,
Where I live Goldfinches by themselves are more common than in flocks. We have cute little chap who is about 1 1/2 years old and we have watched him since he was a chick and to be honest the only socializing he did was with his fellow chicks , he is happy though and he is often visiting our garden. |

| | | Re: Goldfinch Just to keep you all up todate with the goldfinch numbers in my garden. Yesterday great excitement not only our two adults on the niger seed but also, two youngsters. There numbers keep doubling.
We've moved the niger feeder off the main feeding station after Simon King said that goldfinches prefered to eat from feeders away from the others. It seems to ahve worked. If I get any kind of a picture I'll post it.

I have just joined and would like to add my experience of this subject.
About a yer ago I noticed 1 greenfinch feeding off an old peanut seed feeder, so I decided to try some sunflower seed hearts. This was very popular with the greenfinches and also the odd goldfinch. I bought a new sunflower seed feeder and a nyjer feeder (as I read goldfinches love nyjer seed). Wow the sunflower seed feeder entice large numbers of both birds. I have had 12 greenfinches and 12 goldfinches at the same time vying for places at the feeder. The nyjer feeder ........ is not very popular with the goldfinches as they are using the sunflower feeder.
During this spring chaffinches have been "ground" visitors eating the seeds the others drop on the lawn.
I also have a pair of Siskins feeding and I am very pleased about this. They seem to stay on the feeder longer than the other finches and are not so easily freightened either.
