| | | Birding weekend in Berks & Hants Last weekend Adam & I went in search of a few nice finds.
Namely:-
Great White Egret at Great Shefford
Dipper at Welford
Glossy Ibis at Hungerford
White-tailed Eagle at Downton
We dipped out on all four sadly!
However, we did see 53 different species whilst on our travels.
These are listed in my '2011 year list' thread.
The nicest ones's we saw for me were:-
Sparrowhawk
Kestrel
Little Egret
Red-legged Partridge
Red Kite
Pheasant
Treecreeper
Such a shame we missed the Eagle!
We stayed in a B&B next to the field it had been spotted in but no show!
Checked on RBA last night & yesterday it was back!
Here are a few pics from the weekend.
Some taken in very high wind so please excuse the quality.
Kestrel hovering above a low hedge by the roadside
Little Egret
Grey Heron
Nuthatch at The Star pub in East Tytherley, Hants.
Bluetits in the same pub garden
The Weir at Welford
Hoping for better luck this weekend!

Is this Welford Dipper unusual? I didn't think they occurred so far South East?

Tom | Yes, they are unusual in Berkshire.
They are not normally found this far east in the south.

How did you get on at Sheppey? | Not as good as we hoped. It was extremely windy so a lot of birds kept their head's down. We arrived at sunrise to catch some owls, but never saw any the whole day! Saw only 3 types of raptor (lots of Marsh Harrier, a Kestrel and 2 Merlin), lots of RL-Partridge.
But sadly no owls, no Hen Harrier, no Corn Buntings (was apparently loads there the days before), quite a few waders, but no seabirds whatsoever.
53 different birds in total, so not a bad start to the year, but was hoping for a lot more
Only other wildlife we saw was lots of rabbits, hares, and a single Stoat
