| | | ID on finch type bird needed please I am in with a good chance of making myself look silly here.. This bird was on my feeders today and I have not noticed one like it before... If I had to make a guess (which at the moment I have to) I would guess at a juvenile Greenfinch...
However.. The stripes seemed far to prominant, It did not have the same shaped eyes and the colouration of the head was not like I had seen before.
Please could someone give me any ideas as to whether I am right or miles off..
Much appreciated

| | | Re: ID on finch type bird needed please That is excellent news thank you very much .. I am really pleased to have yet another species on my feeders.. A lovely birthday present for me
When I first started feeding birds about 2 yrs ago all I expected to get was starlings blue tits and robins as I live in the city but I have been really lucky and have even had a visit from a sparrowhawk which I managed to get video of..
I am going to have to put a list together with my photos and count the number of birds I have had visit..
Today for example i had this bird also 2 blackcap males and a female blackcap.. They are regulars now.. My feeders are nearly always full of goldfinch greenfinch and linnets, just recently a few bramblings have started appearing among the chaffinch as I say I am a lucky guy
I must look at the picture of male siskin and keep an eye open as I might also have mistook one of these for a greenfinch..
Thank you
Pete

Pete | You're much less likely to mistake an adult male Siskin for a Greenfinch, they have much more distinctive colouring than the females or juveniles.
I live in an area where we get quite a lot of Siskins at different times of year, flocks of 20+ in my garden aren't unusual. We tend to get large flocks in the middle of winter, then again in summer, with lots of juveniles in summer.
I find them fascinating to watch, they are really feisty for such a small bird and I love how they stand up to Chaffinches and Greenfinches and don't get bullied off the feeders. I've noticed that whilst they eat sunflower hearts, they really like Nijer seeds, I've often seen them eating thistle seeds and even dandelion seeds in the wild.

Regards, Audrey. | Thank you Audrey,
I am looking forward to the weekend as I will be able to try to catch a glimpse of one. I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark so at the moment weekends are the only time its light enough for me to see anything. If I see one I will try to get a couple of photos of it/them..
I have studied the photos in the Gallery so I think I know what I am looking for.
Thanks to all who helped here .. Much appreciated as always
Pete
