| | | Big garden birdwatch... I take it many of us will be participating in this, at the end of the month.
For me its a first , so im looking forward to it, but like i have mention before , the lack of birds is not going to look good when i submit the results.
Why do they do it this time of the year?

| | | Re: Big garden birdwatch... Yup I signed up the other day (after seeing an ad on the social network site I work for of all places). If the end of the month is cold and frosty/snowy then I think I'll see plenty. My wee garden was absolutely buzzing with birds today since its frosty again (and I just put out new bird cake and a sunflower hearts feeder). Still only seeing one goldfinch though |

I keep a record for myself each year and it's interesting to see the changes. |

| | | Re: Big garden birdwatch... not sure why they do it in january but i can think of a couple of reasons
birds will be easier to see without plants and trees in bloom
there are no juvenile birds to confuse matters, giving a more 'typical' picture of whats in peoples gardens, a lot of juveniles die before maturity, so counts in january will be of those which survived
gardens tend to be quite busy in winter due to birds struggling to find food elsewhere.
i've never participated, but i might well do this year.

| | | Re: Big garden birdwatch... I look forward to the Big Garden Birdwatch every year . I go up to my Gramp's house and we sit for an hour to see what turns up. On a daily basis he gets loads of blue, great, coal and long tailed tits, nuthatches, robins, dunnocks, chaffinchs, blackbirds, jays, and his resident great spotted woodpeckers...... as soon as I turn up with my pencil and record sheet... the little gits hide!!!

We don't usually get many birds here, and they do have to land to count I think. But it's still good fun.
