| | | Re: One Footed Yellowhammer I saw a one legged Pied Wagtail yesterday, literally the whole leg gone. Felt sorry for it but it seemed to be getting around OK! Guess it's better than having one of it's wings missing |

| | | Re: One Footed Yellowhammer The chaffinch has 'bumblefoot'. A cut or injury has let in the germ that causes this disfiguration. The yellowhammer looks pretty healthy other than the missing foot, so will probably do ok. Birds and animals don't have the emotional attachment that we humans have for our limbs. So long as they can survive, it shouldn't bother it.

| | | Re: One Footed Yellowhammer The pic of the Chaffinch brings back memories of many years ago and a cock sparrow with a club foot who ruled the roost for a few years in and around the roof of our house.
As has been said they seem to adapt pretty well more so than they would if it was a wing

I have a finch with one foot, still manages to perch, the yellowhammer will be fine! |

In the last few weeks I have had number of female and male Chaffinches in the garden suffering from this condition. There is one male that has the growth on both legs which goes almost all the way to the top of the thighs. Though he appears lively and is taking food you can see his mobility is inhibited by it.
I have lots of Sparrows in the garden, occasionally Goldfinches and Greenfinches, but they do not seem to be affected by this condition.
