Who is Pallas?

i recently looked through a birds of britain book and noticed that lots of their names cropped up with the prefix Pallas'. for example pallas warbler etc
who is pallas. was he some great explorer.

He was called Peter Simon Pallas, he was a naturalist who came from Germany. He travelled into Asia and Russia and described several species of birds and mammals.

rank amateur here! just saw my 100th bird yesterday...although i cant decide what it was! and i have no picture. it was a very small wader, like a dunlin but i checked in my book and several birds are the same size, little stint for example. what is the most common bird like that!? i need to know

Not sure what the most common one is in cornwall, its Dunlin here. Sanderling is another good possibility. What habitat was it in and how did it act (was it slowly walking around, or very quick running) ?
