| | | Feisty Mrs blackbird Mrs blackbird was happily feeding on the garden table when she was joined by a group of starlings. She didn't mind a bit and happily shared. Then approached Mr Blackbird and the starlings thought they'd better hop it. Mrs blackbird wasn't having any of it and chased Mr blackbird right off the table!!
It was fascinating to watch and I wondered what he had done to deserve being denied his dinner.
I LOVE watching the birds, their behaviour is fascinating . |

I've had about 4 blackbirds plus mates & 4 robins all sharing a wary truce during the bad snows & frosts. They don't share very easily, they eye each other up as they're hopping about gathering, then they can't stand it anymore & the truce is off & there are much scufflings & chasings. I've been putting plenty out, bought extra peanuts, suet pellets & sultanas & throwing a big scoopful out each day so there has been plenty for all, they're on it as soon as I throw it out & I've discovered my blackbirds love old bananas.
A rat family has moved in to take advantage of the spoils, saw a huge one hoofing it across the lawn with half a roll in its mouth (really must break up my old bread better!) the cheek of it, in broad daylight too!

| | | Re: Feisty Mrs blackbird I had a group of 4 or 5 Blackbirds this morning on the frosty grass chasing each other from one side of the garden to the other. Thats why I have 4 ground feeding stations so even the most put upon birds can grab a snack before being swooped upon.
I know my Robin will not tolerate my little Dunnocks I guess going by the same shaped beaks they would be in compertition for food.
Chris.

| | | Re: Feisty Mrs blackbird At the moment I've got about 8 regular Blackbirds but there's one easily identifiable female which is always the most aggressive, both to the resident Robin and other Blackbirds, in fact even all other birds. I'm glad to say that the Robin just runs rings around the Blackbird and doesn't give up his territory. That Blackbird bitch even goes on the roofed bird table and there's no snow on the ground etc.
Could be time for the local Sparrowhawk to sort her out!

| | | Re: Feisty Mrs blackbird I love watching the blackbirds in my garden, have about 6 that visit and they spend so much time and effort chasing each other off that they must waste so much energy! They were joined today by a mistle thrush, first time seen in our garden (moved in in May 2010) and being an amateur had to get my book out - they are so big! |

It seems that mrs blackbird rules the roost in many gardens! |

I've noticed on numerous occasions that Dunnocks are a confident little bird and will willingly share space. Also, 'my' regular Collared Doves are very tolerant.
I'm glad to learn from this forum that the Mrs Blackbird in my garden is not unique in her behaviour. Touches of the typical Jamaican Black mamma matriarch!

| | | Re: Feisty Mrs blackbird my local blackbird has got to be the most intolerant bird I have ever known, he knocks the hell out of every birds that comes in, he even shouts blue murder when I walk out in the garden! still his song beats every thing for me, even the
nightingale.
