| | Mystery goose Can anyone please help identify this goose /duck seen in late Decembe?
Solo character, mixing in with the Canada geese but clearly noticeably smaller.
Is it a hybrid?

| | | Re: Mystery goose It's a hybrid, but the difficult bit is guessing what between. I'd tentatively suggest Bar-headed Goose and Barnacle Goose. |

I'm with RKB on the Bar-headed Goose ancestry, but would put forward the good ol' Greylag as the other.
Take care, Jason |

Take care, Jason | I don't think it can be Greylag, as it looks like it has to be a Branta species (Canada/Barnacle) due to the darkness of the neck and body, and the mixed colours on the bill - Bar-headed have an orange bill so the black smudging has to come from a black-billed species, and Greylag is pink/orange.
Other possibilities are Barnacle x White-fronted, Barnacle or Canada x domestic Greylag.... |
