cold weather visitor

for the past four days we have had a bird of prey, brown wings and pale brown underneath sitting in one of the tall trees in the fields, Its bigger than a kestral but does not have the long legs of a sparrow hawk, its has dark hooded eyes though, its been trying to take off with birds from my feeder but hasn't quite got the nerve to swoop in close enough, any ideas what it could be please?
