| | | day out in hemel Despite some slight bad news yesterday , i had to go out and help take my mind of things this morning..( i wanted to wait until i see something b4 i came on the site otherwise i would have been on this morning.)
Camera and binos in hand , i went out in search of the elusive waxwing... boy was i in for a surprise...i met a fellow birder who was at the same spot and just stood there admiring the c50 odd waxwings coming and going on 3 seperate trees....
just a small bunch of them...
The sound they make is soo calming ( i thought anyway ) and i stayed there for a good 1hr and a half.
The cold bit through me, but hey i see a waxwing, then a red kite, fieldfare redwings, song thrush, blackcap male, and a heron flying over and a poss brambling... so what a morning
Passers by kept asking us what we were looking at and then a gentleman from the herts section of the rspb turned up and got talking to him....
I decided to head off and look for the little egret down our local common...and again i had a feast full of birds..2 little egrets, kingfisher ,BH gulls, 2 cormarants, a snipe ( all be it flying. reports of common and jack , but not sure which .) and a peregrine falcon .. i think.
so all in all it has been the best xmas present so far....

| | Re: day out in hemel Hi ActionFinch, I just bumped into this thread & realised I may have seen you that day, was this the trees on the corner at Windmill Road in Adeyfield? I was walking on my way Christmas shopping & I took a detour to see the Waxwings here, I was 25 & wearing a flat cap. If you'd like to send me your number offline I'll text when I see anything about as my work means I spend alot of time wandering around Hemel which means me inadvertantly finding stuff like the winter roosting Peregrine (glad to hear you may have seen it), the 2 Jack Snipe (possibly this too) with the Common one, the Osprey at Piccotts End, Redstarts near Maylands etc, all within work time, I guess I'm very lucky to get that chance but would be nice if I could get some other Hemel Birders to see some of the stuff. I'm just inbetween homes at the mo but used to be in Leverstock Green, which area are you incase there is anything good near? I've just started a blog devoted to Birds in Hemel which now I'm back from working away alot will keep up-to-date with my records from Hemel & will top-up with some of my previous sightings, Here it is: HEMEL BIRDING , if this link doesn't appear properly here you can type hemelbirding as one word in google. The top pic is one of the Jack Snipe that you mentioned.
Kind Regards | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
