Are you sure of the description ie. 'yellow tail sides', accurate size estimation?
(Yellow wagtails have yellow vents and white tail sides but summer visitors anyway). Grey Wagtails are grey on the back, so I'd rule out any wagtail sp. on what you've said so far.
It's difficult when new members ask for an ID to know how experienced they are with common birds. This time of year, and with the weather, gardens often get new visitors that are very common but don't normally visit gardens.
Perhaps some more detail would be helpful.
Was it a finch species, a thrush species for example? Did you notice the shape of the bill and leg colour? How did it behave? Calling? Wagging it's tail?
Perhaps a Green Woodpecker (they can look brownish on the back) but I would have thought you'd notice a red head and again, doesn't have yellow tail sides but a yellowish rump. I'd suggest an escaped pet of some sort but can't think of any brown backed parakeets or budgies!

| | | Re: Idenity of bird anyone please If it was like a Willow Warbler, it was probably a Chiffchaff, a number of them winter here now.
But with the yellow stripes on the tale it sounds more like a Greenfinch.
