| | | Urgent help needed I thought I heard someone in the dining room so investigated and a starling was throwing itself at the window. It flew away when it saw me but seconds later there was a knock at the door. Answered it and in flew the starling! It is very very dark and thick with snow/ice outside and it won't go near the door! I've shut it in the kitchen diner so I can come on the puter but what on earth do I do with a terrified starling ? It's quiet now on the curtain rail but as soon as I appear it understandably gets scared. |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed You mean the Starling knocked on the door? (checks to see if it's April 1st)
Well maybe the bird was being predated by a Sprawk and panicked (who wouldn't?). If you can bare the cold, I'd try and leave the door open and see if the Starling can find it's way out. Good luck and let us know. Wizzo

| | Re: Urgent help needed yes that's exactly what happened , lol. It must have been throwing itself at the glass in the door like it was at the window. The poor thing is really distressed now and hitting walls/mirrors etc. Have taken down the mirror because it was trying to fly through it! I wonder if I turn off the lights it will be drawn to the light from the snow? Rural here, no street lights and the outside light bust . Will give that a try, with the door open of course . |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Very strange actions for a bird, unless it was to do with its reflection from the door/window.
You may need some help to capture him and release him, best left till the morning now.Although i have found if feral pigeons get into out work place,we can catch them easily by turning the light off, they seem to not want to move in darkness, although i do not know if this applies to other birds.
It seems healthy so i would release it first thing in the morning.
I f you are not happy with it loose in your room you could catch it and keep in a box overnight.
Possibly leave some food for it to help keep its strength up,ready for release in this harsh weather. |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Thank you for the welcome Wizzo . I have turned off the lights and left the back door open. We have badgers, foxes and next doors farm dog and cat regularly visiting so I'm just hoping they don't all decide to drop in for dinner! It would be to have them but don't know how I'd get them all out again |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Hi Naturenutz, I've thrown a fatball on top of the kitchen unit, it is very quiet now the lights are off. I'm disabled so won't have a chance of catching the poor thing without doing myself an injury. My daughter will be here later so maybe she'll have some success but I'm really concerned about birdie. He is gasping with beak wide open and looks very very scared. I do hope he'll be ok. I'd leave him there but I need to go in the kitchen, have to make tea yet! Hopefully he'll find the fatbell and water on the saucer on the windowsill. |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed Hi mamma,he sounds a little stressed at the moment. If you or your daughter decide to catch him,try with lights off,it may be better to put him in a cardboard box until the morning .he would be confused if released into the darkness and may not find a good place to roost. The other option is too cause as little disturbance as possible until morning and try opening the door then.
Hope things work out |

| | | Re: Urgent help needed He has found his way out now, I left the door opened but turned the lamps back on because he looked like he was settled in the dark. I wouldn't have minded in any other room and wouldn't mind for myself but was very worried about him coping with me in and out of the room. I've had birds throwing themselves at the windows at night before, they stop if I turn off the lights! I used to think it was bats but they were too big, then I got a good look at one and was def a bird but didn't get to see long enough to identify it. It's the first time one has knocked on the door though .
Thanks for the input, it's really appreciated. I managed to get a picture so will post it when I've uploaded it. Not done pics here yet so will probably take me forever . |
