i must be both | If you're mad, then so am I, so you are in good company. I think there's an illness that some people get if they spend too long indoors. They call it 'cabin fever' or something. And it makes you go a little crazy. So it's best to be just plain old mad and indulge in your passion at the same time. At least that should stop you becoming crazy.

Hopefully you'll have a good day! Quote:

And on the subject of this thread, I agree: College Lake is a wonderful spot, especially at this time of year. My friend used to be the BBOWT education officer there, he's recently decamped to Devon but he did some great stuff whilst he was working at CL. |

| | | Re: College lake Tring The trouble with College Lake is that all the hides, with the exception of the latest one, are such a long way from the water. Stockers Lake at Rickmansworth is better in this respect, but the hides aren't so cosy!

The car temp said -2 it felt alot colder than that with the wind chill.. .
A 15 min drive from home me and a friend went of to the lake. Bear in mind this is my 2nd outing since starting bird watching so im still green.
1st impressions were heart warming, and the visitors centre is really good.
Binos around our necks and gloves attached firmly off we went. a very pleasant stroll overall around the lake. anyway best bits... redwings and fieldfares galore...we didnt know where to look , they were everywhere. widgeon, redkite ,sparrow hawk diving into the bushes after something ( not sure what ) tuffed ducks, comarants, long tailed tits, never seen so many , littlegrebe, 2 pair of red crested pochards.
The usual, chaffinches , B Tits, great spotted woody , geese , swans....it was such a pleasure , even to the point of seeing at least 30 canada geese come flying in and landing on the top lake.and to top it off a snipe...
and a continental blackbird, ( could have been a 1st winter male mind, but hey , such an enjoyable day ,despite the cold.
On the way home just coming off the by pass was a buzzard perched on top a of street light...
cant wait to go again maybe in warmer weather......

Jim | not being an expert, like i said earlier, but your right jim they are not that close.
we found the best hide or i did, was as you look out of the visitors centre the hide on the right hand side , where the lake kicks in a bit, not the big one at lower level you can see, but the one higher up , thats where we see the snipe and the LTT, and most of the waterfowl.
in fact heres a pic its a small hide top R/H corner of the pic , you will see it
