Thankyou! | If you have room you could try some Hawthorn and Blackthorn. These are ok to plant now but it will be too warm after Feb, if you get them in whip form they are often only around 20p each. I have 80 to plant next weekend. They are great for wildlife when mature, but they will take a good few years to become large so they are only good for a long term project!
Take care

| | | Re: shrubs and plants How big or small is your garden? Birch can be grown in a small area
(I have seen nine in a block approx 8ft square) and tits love it, Hazel,
Hawthorn,Pyracantha,(have you looked in the garden forum ?)Buddlia,
Golden Privet, Elder "Black Lace" anything which gives insects and shelter

| | | Re: shrubs and plants In addition to suggestions above, fruit trees are popular with insects + birds, Rowan, Amelanchier is good tree for small garden-attractive flowers in May, good autumn colour + berries which birds relish, Rosa rugosa hips are liked by Greenfinches, Cotoneasters.
Goldfinches could be attracted by Teasels, Evening Primroses, ornamental thistles. Ivy makes cover for wide range of invertebrates, nesting for birds + fruits are enjoyed by Blackcaps + Wood Pigeons amongst others.
Good luck- wildlife gardening is great fun, though not without its frustrations as certain things won't grow or get demolished by slugs, etc or the wrong wildlife is attracted (couple of days back there were 2 young rats on my peanut feeder- day later I was unusually pleased to see a black cat + Fox which hopefully are good Rat catchers! |

Thanks for taking time out to give advice, its much appreciated, my garden is onlly a small urban garden i guess about 20x40 foot, and has a few shrubs dotted around it, but ive got a bit at the bottom which i,m letting go wild to some extent i,ve put some ivy against the back fence and put a pile of old logs down so that should help, once again thanks! |

| | | Re: shrubs and plants I am so glad I didn't cut my buddlia back, as I was tempted to do. (It obscures a good view).
It is continuously full of blue and great tits, dunnocks, wrens, gold and greenfinches, my one robin, and starlings. I've hung feeders in there, and it provides shelter against the elements.
In the summer it will give me a wonderful curtain of butterflies and perfumed blossoms, and all from something that grows like a weed.
I will prune it in the spring, if the wildlife gives me a chance!
Holly is great too, and looks lovely!
