| | | Birds in the news Saturday is when i catch up with the news,as its generally quiet at work and i can happily read through the telegraph website - and sometimes flick through the tabloids people leave around the office.
today i found a piece from a few days ago about the slaughter of birds in the mediterranean. Its a bit long, but is very well written, very interesting, and covers a subject which is quite shocking but good to know about.
here's a link Songbirds, poached and eaten - Telegraph
didnt realise it was so bad! at least some people are trying to do something about it, but it is difficult when you are dealing with peoples livelihoods and traditions.
I also had a glance at 'The sun' on my lunch break, horrible. Especially jeremy clarkson asking why and how the RSPB manage to own more land than the prince of wales and other rich powerful people, especially as they are 'just a charity'. I dont know why he included this in his column, though i dont understand a lot of what he says haha

| | | Re: Birds in the news Horrible! heard about this before. Something we did in the past eating, only we ate sparrows by the thousands. Even if they manage to migrate from Cyprus they face being shot over Spain!

The use of the expression,'Just a charity',answers his own, somewhat ill-considered question.Charities can be at least as powerful if not more so than any individual because they catch the popular imagination and take there provenance from the public at large. If they sometimes have bedfellows such as Clarkson they just have to live with it but no-one should underestimate the power of the people,to paraphrase Wolfie Smith! Frankly, it should not come as much of a surprise that Mr Clarkson fails to fathom this, given his track record.

This is why he is so good at the job he does, he encourages debate! |

| | | Re: Birds in the news RSPB just a charity?, I wonder if Clarkson knows about the "Grants from UK goverment" from DEFRA £4.5million, Environment agency £1.1 million, Natural England £1.06 million, plus other sizeable top-ups from other development agencys, over £12 million from the tax payer certainly helped, no wonder they are getting worried by goverment spending cuts. i see today they have new collecting boxes in a couple of supermarkets. |
