| | | Rack your 'Spotting Birds' brain I was given a book in the mid to late 1960s called 'Spotting Birds' and on the front was a colour picture of a Bluethroat.
I would like an image of the cover does anyone have a copy or can anyone find it on the net - I couldn't!
I just can't remember who it was by, nobody famous, and I don't think the illustrations were anything to write home about, but it was one of the first books I was given.

Thank you very much and tell me what you typed in to search? I tried Google images and got nothing!
Well done team!

| | | Re: Rack your 'Spotting Birds' brain In 'Advanced Search' I used the exact phrase 'Spotting Birds'. I added 'book' to the search too.

| | | Re: Rack your 'Spotting Birds' brain A Pocket Guide to Birdwatching
by Jaroslav Spirhanzl Duris and Edmund Burke
Illustrated by Jan Solovjev
Published by Paul Hamlyn, London 1964
(Translated from the original Czechoslovakian version 1961)
I have the original 1964 publication - given to me by my Mother and the first guide book I ever used - Collins has taken us a long way since then.
Some interesting snippets though - Wryneck is quoted as being a breeder (though scarce even then), Red Back Shrike still breeding in Britain, Turtle Dove very rare, Yellow Hammer is listed as 'Yellow Bunting' (much nicer!), Black Redstart is widespread and the 'Red Spotted Bluethroat', an 'occasional visitor' is listed as 'formerly common' around Norfolk ... |

| | | Re: Rack your 'Spotting Birds' brain As a boy I had this book too (not sure what happened to it?) but even then I was never that impressed with it. Some of the pictures were pretty awful!
We are so fortunate today with the variety + high standard of field guides, though a few awful books still get released. |

| | | Re: Rack your 'Spotting Birds' brain I've put a bid on one on e-bay just so I can get a decent photo of the cover for my bookie wook.
Now that's sad.
