If you birdwatch from 2 different locations however, I would think this would be exceptable.Perhaps do one from your house and one in a local park/playing fields on each day. Good excuse to sit for an hour taking in the birds(bit like my husband on the beach ).

| | | Re: 2007 Big Garden Birdwatch Thanks everyone for reminding me about the 'Big Garden Birdwatch' on the 27th and 28th of January. I've just looked it up on the RSPB web-site. If you want more information go to Big Garden Birdwatch.
You must just count the birds for one hour over that weekend and cant do it twice !! Not only is this event good fun but it also provides the RSPB with valuable scientific information regarding the population of wild birds in Britain. Thanks again and good luck with the counting. Hawkwind..... |

Saw my first lightning visit from a hungry sparrow hawk a couple of days ago in the garden of this temporary house which was great!

Dan | BUMP-As requested by young Dan. So fill up your feeders, don your disguises, settle on your seats, break-out the biscuits and watch the birdies tomorrow.
Let's make this a WAB meeting of minds for our feathered friends.
I'll post my numbers on here when I've done so we can compare notes.

| | | Re: 2007 Big Garden Birdwatch Most of the birds that visit my garden are easy to count- but not the most numerous, which is House Sparrow It's impossible to get an absolute number as many sit hidden in the bushes + there's constant movement. Yes I can get a reasonable estimate, say c30, but you can't submit that online, the form will only admit an absolute number, so have to just put in number of best estimate.
Here's hoping for bird-filled feeders tomorrow with perhaps an unexpected visitor to spice things up! |

I did join in to do the Dutch equivelent of the garden bird count in December though.
We only had to count the most of any one species seen at the same time to avoid counting the same bird more than once.
good luck and get counting! |

Julie | It is great fun but they have hidden the recording sheet rather well this year. It's at: Download recording sheet
It's not mandatory, but I find this really helps the younger recorders.

| | | Re: 2007 Big Garden Birdwatch I'm going to have trouble counting the starlings when they descend on mass i must have between 30-50 at any one time, however it won't be too hard to count any others as nothing else comes in these days, if i'm lucky and get my timing right i might get a couple of blue tits and great tits a few collared doves and maybe a sprinkling of wood pigeons, blackbirds and magpies, lets hope for the best, there will be plenty of food for them! |

Julie | I'd almost forgotten about this, though I've done it for several years now, and I'll be doing it again this weekend (thanks to you, Julie). My 2007 garden year list is now 23, but I'd be surprised if I get more than 10 in one hour - the birds always seem to let me down!
The RSPB's watch is an excellent way of getting more people interested in their garden birds, and hopefully will succeed in increasing the numbers of RSPB members.
However, having taken part in the BTO's weekly Garden BirdWatch for over 10 years, I feel the records I submit to them will be more scientifically useful.
Good luck to everyone who takes part. |

good luck and get counting! | Awww. Don't feel sad and left out . We know how much effort you've put into your mini wildlife reserve, so you're doing your bit for all species. If everyone cared as much as you obviously do then perhaps some of our lovely birds wouldn't be on the edge, like some are.
So cheer up, you're doing fine

Not bad, seen better days. A massive hairy moggie made an appearance right near the end of the hour and put a lot of birds off.
Good fun. I've submitted my results too.

| | | Re: 2007 Big Garden Birdwatch 15 species in the hour this morning. however numbers well down: only 5 sparrows, 6 greenfinches and 0 (yes none) starlings. Just not been cold enough to drive them this far west I suppose. Still a very happy hour and still time tomorrow for those who have not yet found the time.

| | | Re: 2007 Big Garden Birdwatch Just submitted my results, I recorded 21 species. However, they were all in very small numbers and much smaller than I usually find in winter. Almost all of the birds were recorded in 1s, 2s or 3s.
