Hi, this is the list I use when I want to check a birds latin name before uploading to WAB. Probably not exactly what you are looking for but it is a British list

Try this:
Blackwell Synergy - Cookie Absent

If that link doesn't work, go onto the BOU website and look up 'species list' and a link to the british checklist is on the next page

Re: list of british birds?

I use this list Species Codes

As it's in alpha order, therefore easier to find the bird!

Comments column... where you can put down your thoughts and identification tips and tricks. Try a rule of thumb where for every twitch you go on, you go to a local wood, park, marsh and do some 'birding.' I think you'll get a lot more out of your twitching. Also, use that 'local patch watching' to get to know the topography of a bird.

This is a good idea I could do with different outlines to make notes in

Re: list of british birds?

I've never really understood the whole 'ticking' thing, is it a boy thing? A type of hunter gatherer instinct?
I make fieldnotes obviously, including a list of what I have seen at a particular site I need to for my job for the write up as otherwise it's easy to forget the details for a specific site but I have never felt the need to keep a long standing life or garden or 'patch' checklist. I understand the excitement with seeing a new bird but in my own head I already know what I have seen and what I haven't, is that what the list is about? Do other people forget what they've seen or feel satisfaction in seeing it on paper? Is it about having a longer list than others?
Hope I'm not coming across badly here, it's so hard to get tone across in type!! Absolutely criticism here, I'm just curious to understand

Good point! Some of what I see does seem to be a "trainspotting" sort of thing, standing on the end of a platform, ticking off numbers but it not really mattering that you understand what you have seen or what it meant. Would be interesting to see what people think.

Seriously though I can understand the need of a list and of "ticking" it off just to know where you are.

Re: list of british birds?

I think other people can do as they like without the need for the rest of us to approve or disapprove of their activities.
If you enjoy Twitching & Ticking & Listing or "Robin Stroking" or trainspotting then that is all that matters.

Gill - It's definitely a hunter / gatherer thing with me
I keep various lists (electronic format) as my brain does not remember everything I saw, where and when I saw it. (I have recorded 300+ moths in my garden, but would struggle to name 250 of them from memory)
Also I enjoy the "treasure hunt" of searching for new species whether it be birding, mothing or any other wildlife watching, and being able to add that new species to one or more of my lists.
Does that make things any clearer?

Re: list of british birds?

I thought I might try a new game this year - open my field guide to something (birds, trees, dragonflies, wild flowers...) at random every now and then and attempt to find whatever it is on the page I stumble on. Might lead me to some interesting places. Or just into my back garden, since the first time I tried it with the bird guide I got a dunnock.

Not exclusively! The only person I know who has told me their total for 2007 is female! (March Tit this morning at coffee - number 57)

Yes I think so - as I become better at invertebrates I can see lists may become important being so numerous!

The treasure hunt drive isn't very strong in me I don't think - at least seemingly not with regard to seeing new birds as I am almost happier to stumble unexpectedly across those, however, last year on a sunny Day in August the drive to go get pictures of Adonis Blue and other pretty butterlfies and insects became very very strong indeed the closer it got to the end of the working day I suppose that's a similar thing really.

That's global warming for you (makes you type badly, a little reported effect!)

Re: list of british birds?

I don't know if this is of any help but there is a bird data base, designed by someone I know, that allows you to record all your birds, where & when you saw them, any comments you wish to make and so on. You can create any species that come along that is not already on the list as well as creating new sites as you go along. I have used it for a few years now and it has been of great use to me for numerous reasons.

You can add photos, videos and sound recordings to it. You can also pull out reports by location, by date, by comment etc. It is a very versatile data base but you must have Access installed on your PC to use it.

Here is a link to it. http://www.brandonbirding.co.uk/download.asp

I hope that is of some help to anyone out there who is looking for such a programme.

John

Thanks for that John, it looks very useful. I've been considering creating some form of database for myself, with the best images I've taken so far. At the moment I struggle to find what I've taken, it's difficult to remember where and when I took images. This database looks like you've saved me a lot of hassle!
