| | | Pumpkin Recycling How suitable, or otherwise would the innards and seeds for use in bird feeders?
With Halloween in the offing there're going to be several households dumping pumpkin pulp because it doesn't appeal to our palate(personal taste applies)
How well would it be received by the indigent wildlife? Any views?

| | | Re: Pumpkin Recycling I dont know about about wildlife but the seeds can be roasted and the pulp made into a very good low calorie soup.
No waste in this house. |

| | | Re: Pumpkin Recycling We haven't done pumpkins this year, but previously we have given the seeds/pulp to our chickens, so can't see any problems putting them out for wild birds.
Once its done with, the actual pumpkin goes in the compost heap. |

| | | Re: Pumpkin Recycling Rodents & birds will definitely appreciate the seeds - gently toast them in the oven to dry off the pulp. I used to feed them to my pet gerbils who absolutely adored them |

| | | Re: Pumpkin Recycling Long ago, in a previous incarnation, my partner, who was rather a good cook but a little on the experimental side for my taste, decided to recycle the remains of the Halloween pumpkin in a few,to my eye, exotic dishes. Pumpkin soup, pumpkin goulash, pumpkin bloody custard. The result is that I don't care if I never see another flaming pumpkin and am over, flippin',joyed to hear that wildlife are willing to eat them. As for the description of composted pumpkins regenerating themselves at an exponential rate it is, quite frankly, a soddin' nightmare.

I'm quite an adventurous eater but pumpkin and butternut squash (almost the same thing) are the only vegetables/fruits that I CANNOT stand - something about the flavour that just I can't get over.
Pumpkins seem to overpower the flavour of everything else when you put them into a stew/soup, so you can't even 'disguise' them into food |

| | | Re: Pumpkin Recycling I'm not usually an old thread bumper but I seem to be in a similar situation to Jackaroo (hope the talk of pumpkin doesn't give you the boak mate). Sooo basically I have a load of pumpkin guts and seeds as I have been carving for my works yearly pumpkin comp and don't really care for the stuff to eat so would like to feed it to the birds. I don't want them to ignore it completely and be left with a stinking pile of pumpkin mess so would cooking it intil soft help or should I just dump it out raw? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
