| | | Owl ID We have lots of owls round here and you can here tawnies and little owls most nights. There was one tonight that was different (I'm assuming it is an owl). It sounds like a very, very, quick and high pitched short eared owl; when it goes oo-oo-oo-oo. There's about 6 of these oo's very close together and it's repetitive. Not sure really how to describe it but been playing things on RSPB and other websites and that's the best I could come up with. Any ideas? |

Definitely not a tawny owl - promise you! Seriously I've heard tawnies every night for the last twenty odd years and not heard one like this! |

| | | Re: Owl ID yes - both! Speed wise it was like a machine gun and sound was more - well if you imagine you were a kid doing indian noises in a cowboy and indian game (only at machine gun speed), that would be similar!
Thanks all but def not a tawny! |

| | | Re: Owl ID I have to say that I reckon I learn a new tawny call almost every year and I also have been listening to them for years and years, they have quite a variety!
I have lost count of the number of times I have tracked an unfamiliar nocturnal call and discovered that its a tawny!

| | | Re: Owl ID I know what you mean Gill but I don't think so.... This call went on as it flew up and down the lane - the same call over and over - no variations. An escapee - maybe? |
