| | | Trichomonosis I've written a post about this before, however I think there is trichonomois in my garden. I've found two dead pigeons in the garden, last month a pigeon on my bird table looked bloated and lethargic, so I stopped feeding the birds for a few weeks.
Is this disease still common amongst pigeons?
I'm going to report to the RSPB anyway, using the following web link: The RSPB: Advice: Trichomonosis in finches and other garden birds
Any one else have evidence of this disease in their garden ? The regular Greenfinch in my garden has also disppeared. |

| | | Re: Trichomonosis Hi Guinnessman,
No evidence of this here in my part of Milton Keynes. Plenty of finches 'attacking' the feeders and they all look well. Pidgeons also are OK. Perhaps it's a geographical thing. Where are you located?

| | | Re: Trichomonosis Finches certainly down in my garden for the time of year, but it's been relatively mild and there's still lots of natural food around.
Pigeons (and other species) do carry trich (Trichomonas gallinae is well known as a cause of disease in pigeons and doves) it wasn't until 2005 that it was recognised as causing disease in Greenfinch and Chaffinch etc and once into a finch population can spread very quickly amongst communal feeders.
If you find anymore now you've resumed feeding, suspend feeding again. Meanwhile, strict hygiene is essential as you know. I used a mild solution of dettol to disinfect water baths and thoroughly wash and dry feeders each time they are empty (I don't feed feeders to the top anymore, as more frequently emptied feeders encourages more frequent cleaning!) |
