There was a few of us asking what the hell it was. | White plumage always makes birds look comparatively larger than black plumage if same species side by side due to optical conditions - white reflects light/black absorbs it as you probably know. Juv/1w birds often tend to appear larger than full grown adults due to carrying more fat as well as having 'fluffier' feathers due to the poorer quality and softer structure cf. to adults. Looks fine for a 1w Cormorant cf. to the Black-headed Gulls in the foreground. |

A fat bird doesn't look any different to a thin bird, as the feathers cover it all, and the absolute differences are pretty small.
Isn't carbo a bit bigger than sinensis? And maybe males bigger than females? |

| | | Re: Bird Id, LIke a cormorant but huge I originally thought it was a juvenile however as stated before it was easily noticabley larger than the rest.
I have stiched together another comorant with the same breed of seagull in the foreground on the same flash so you can see that this one does seem larger/fatter than normal. |

| | | Re: Bird Id, LIke a cormorant but huge Feathers are able to be raised, like hairs on your arms. So birds can sleek themselves or fluff up and change their shape, in order to trap air next to the skin. Think of how Robins sometimes look round and sometimes look sleek. So unless the bird is actually longer, it isn't any bigger. |

| | | Re: Bird Id, LIke a cormorant but huge It does look bulkier, and I agree with RKB, but also, this may be plumped up as a defence or maybe bloated for some reason unknown to me. Needs to eviscerate?
Cheers

| | | Re: Bird Id, LIke a cormorant but huge I agree with the original post. It looks at least 50% bigger. So, is it just a 'big' cormorant.????
I think it is!!
