| | | Large Flocks of Lapwings Have anyone else seen any large flocks of Lapwings.
In North Yorkshire, near flamborough Head, must have been around 300+ birds yesterday in a field. where likely would these birds have originated from? |

| | | Re: Large Flocks of Lapwings That's excellent. I haven't seen a flock half that size for many years. |

| | | Re: Large Flocks of Lapwings There was another field with around 70-100 of these birds. Quite spectacular to see.
Have these birds migrated from the continent? The largest flock I'd seen prior to this was around 75 Lapwings at a local lake last winter. |

| | | Re: Large Flocks of Lapwings I was excited to see a large flock of lapwings flying low over a field near me just a couple of days ago (150+). It was near Stadhampton in south Oxfordshire. We often get small lapwing flocks round here but that was the largest i've ever seen locally.
Groups of lapwings really are a lovely site |

| | | Re: Large Flocks of Lapwings i've been counting the flock at Attenborough nature reserve over the summer, and at times there have been over 400 birds. usually around 200-300 birds though, although last time i went they had dwindled to around 40! Elsewhere in notts at Netherfield Lagoons, there is another large flock of upto around 200 birds, most of these were still there yesterday afternoon.
my guess would be that they are small groups which have joined together from breeding sites, congregating before they migrate elsewhere. i'm looking forward to them breeding again next year -always a great sight!

| | | Re: Large Flocks of Lapwings The last week in September I watched a flock of lapwings soaring about for about 10 minutes before they landed on the reservoir. This was the first time I had seen them do this.
I am saying it was lapwings but please correct me if I am wrong as I didn't have binoculars with me. |

| | | Re: Large Flocks of Lapwings yep definately lapwings, its great when they all suddenly break into flight when a sparrowhawk or something else spooks them - a flurry of square-shaped wings.
