| | | Dead Mute Swan A couple of days ago our resident Female Mute Swan was missing, and today I found her body, still almost fully intact and was wondering if you're meant to report it to someone?
Like the SSPCA, RSPB or a Wildlife Charity near us.
If it helps she has 3 cygnets alive and her mate and she's not ringed. |

| | | Re: Dead Mute Swan Unfortunately I can't give you any help with your request. Sorry.
I do have a vaugely macabre question though - what are you going to do with the body?
I am lacking a swan skull in my collection you see. I apologise for not knowing the answer to your question, and if my request has offended you in any way. |

| | | Re: Dead Mute Swan Found this on the website of the Yorkshire Swan Rescue centre:
"If there is no ring, then it depends on where the dead bird was found as to who it should be reported to:
Local authority (environmental health/refuse collection) ;
or local authority's rights of way officer ;
The Highways Authority ;
The landowner ;
DEFRA (if in an area with livestock)." |

| | | Re: Dead Mute Swan I was hoping the cuase of death could been found out, as 3 or 4 years ago our resident swans were beaten to death by thugs, and I was hoping this hadn't been the same type of thing.
But thanks for the help, I'll tell my local council and see what they say |

| | | Re: Dead Mute Swan In theory you don't have to inform anyone as it's a wild bird and just a natural occurrence, unless you feel the need to find out what caused it's death or it is likely to become a health hazard. Natural decomposition is best otherwise anyone called to officially remove it will just bag it up and it will undoubtedly end up being dumped in a landfill site or be burnt, neither of which is ideal.
Cheers,
