Coot /Moorhen not near water.

How common is it to see a coot /morrhen not near rivers streams etc.. i see one on the way to work this morning.. i can say we have non of the above in the area. The canal is at least 2-2 1/2 miles away?

Hi, they, certainly Moorhen, forage quite happily on meadows usually near water as you are meaning I think, but sometimes quite far afield, but there may be a small unknown pond?
However, if theres a good food supply they will, as all birds will, use it if normal food ranges/areas arent so good - they do fly after all!
Supply and demand and ease of access or non-disturbance will play a part.
