magpie tag team

I was observing 2 magpies and a squirrel today , the squirrel managed to find some food and two maggys were near by , and they both tried to get whatever it was from the squirrel.It brought a smile to my face as they tried to surround it .They werent sucsessful but clever in what they were doing.

This remind of an incident a few years ago. A magpie was repeatedly flying at the squirrel as it leapt from branch to branch. On two occasions it flew close enough to seize a beak full of hair. Then suddenly the squirrel seemed to lose its foothold and dropped about 10 feet to the ground. It remained on its back motionless and I could see it had an acorn in its mouth. The magpie perched nearby and seemed to be considering its next move but on seeing me flew off. I approached the squirrel thinking it dead but as I was about to prod it with my stick, it suddenly righted itself and bounded off through the woodland. Was it playing possum or momentarily concussed?
