Sparrowhawk Feeding

Hi

I was out Fly Fishing yesterday on Chew Valley Reservoir and spotted what I think was a sparrow hawk attempting to take a little grebe off the surface of the reservoir. It made 5 attempts to take the grebe but was eventaually chased of by the harrasing crows and gulls. Is this normal behavoir for a sparrowhawk, or could it have been a different hawk?

A sparrowhawk is very much a opportunist so in a word yes' many years ago I witnessed a male s/ hawk take young ducklings out of the nest on foot coming back time after time until he had taken the lot this was to feed the hen and her young of course. Alan.
