| | | Black necked grebes I regularly go out on my jet ski around broadsands in Torbay (Devon) and used to see small seabirds I presumed were winter plumage guillemots but have just discovered they were BLACK NECKED GREBES!!! How cool and I thought I had never seen them but i've looked at photos and realised that they were black necked grebes.

| | | Re: Black necked grebes Vinny, you do get winter-plumaged Guillemots there too, so you may have seen both species- guess it's not easy to focus your bins from a jet-ski. Have you seen the breeding Guillemots (and Kittiwakes, Shags + Fulmars) on Berry Head?
A great place + not just for birds as it's a magnet for plant rarity hunters with some real specialities there. |

| | | Re: Black necked grebes Does the noise of the jet ski not scare the birds away? I know when they are being used here the noise sends all the birds soaring in the other direction.
By the way you do seem to lead a very exciting and full life..and and I am very impressed with the variery of birds you are able to see!
I am afraid you make 'bird watching' on my local stomping ground sound very boring.
How about some photos for the less adventerous of us (me that is)!

| | | Re: Black necked grebes Black necked Grebes are superb birds, especially in full mating colours.
Here's one I got last April, back in the days when the sun shone! |

| | | Re: Black necked grebes Hi Coldun that may be possible now I got a new camera for christmas so if I see anything cool I will definetely post it on here. By the way I don't really trapse round the country looking for these birds I just keep a really sharp eye out around my house and am very lucky to live down here in south Devon and where I am seems to have a wide diversity. Haven't seen the Goshawk for a while now though maybe hes visiting his parents for christmas |

| | | Re: Black necked grebes I know what you mean about 'keeping an eye out locally'..we used to live at Rampside Barrow-in-Furness where you just never knew what might turn up if you kept your eyes and ears open.
The Irish Sea (Morecambe Bay), Mud Flats, Ponds, Docks, Sand Dunes and more all on the door step, a real Gem of a place to live.
It was a wonderful area to bird watch...so I do envy you having so much on your doorstep!
