| | | Re: Holiday snaps The egret looks like a little egret but is too big and it looks like it has yellow feet but its hard to tell..
The other egrets Great and Cattle have black or dark feet..
The only other one I can think of is the snowy egret this has yellow feet..
Or could be a Chinese egret its really hard to tell..
Great shots and lovely birds..

| | | Re: Holiday snaps I've done quite a bit of African birding + visited Masai Mara + Lake Navaisha in Kenya. Fabulous country- hope you enjoyed it!
1 Lizard Buzzard- black throat stripe diagnostic
2 Red-capped Robin-chat
3 I think juv Dark Chanting Goshawk
4 I presume this was on coast as appear to be mangrove present; dark bird looks like Dimorphic (Mascerene) Egret which is a coastal species I haven't seen with a Little Egret (though there is a similar white morph of former species). Yellow is restricted to feet on Little + extends further up leg in Dimorphic. |

| | | Re: Holiday snaps No 3 is possibly one of the Pale (Eastern?) Chanting Goshawks (longer legged and paler whitish eyes and paler yellow legs than the very similar to juvenile DC Gos - (the latter probably being less common than the former in parts of Kenya, so where you were, it can probably be ID'd on range)
Had a google and there's overlap in Western Kenya with DCG but otherwise Eastern Pale Chanting Goshawk would seem to be the default species (with a southern form in Southern Kenya)

| | | Re: Holiday snaps Thank you all for your replies and id's.
As you say Neil, its a fabulous country with so much to see.
We were based at a place called Kilifi which is midway between Mombasa and Malindi.
The wildlife was amazing, not just on the safari which was fantastic but also in the local area.
Birds, butterflies, insects and reptiles everywhere.
There was even troops of vervet monkeys and 2m long monitor lizards wandering around the hotel grounds. |

. | More likely based on location to be an Eastern Chanting Goshawk then - if you look at the distribution maps from the link I posted earlier - Kilifi is outside the range of Dark Chanting Goshawk. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
