Crows on the roof

This may be a really silly question, but why are crows marching around on my roof every morning and hauling off great lumps of moss. I'm having to sweep up big clods of the stuff every day. Do they eat moss or are they looking for critters hidden inside it? Or are they just trying to wake me up - sounds like they've got hammers and hobnail boots some mornings.

My local blackbird doe's it too I would think they are just looking for food.

There are often small red worms in the moist moss, Jackdaws and Magpies throw the moss off our roof in their search

Crows and Blackbirds are better for cleaning Gutters than local housing maintenance.

I have the opposite problem Artdemole - they chuck lumps of moss into the gutter causing blockages. Luckily the crows seem to have got bored with this - haven't seem them today.
