The biggest clue is that you can (just about) see the black tail - there is a little bit of white at the edges but it clearly doesn't have black & white bars across it. |

lovely pic but just about the most difficult angle possible to tell them apart from as you can't see the angle of the beak either. |

There are a few other features that point to Black-tailed Godwit (such as the tertial pattern, and the fairly orangy breast), but it's defnitely not the easiest of angles from which to assess some features.
