| | | Really big finch like small bird chick Afternoon all, quick question (sorry no pic), the feeder attracts a fair few species chaffinch, gold finch apparently though havent seen them myself, robins, sparrows, great tits, blue tits, coal tits, ring collar dove, wood pigeon, ruddy magpies, blackbirds and a starling apparently. But today I've noticed what from shape and plummage seems to be a darn big small bird chick, doesnt seem to be a chick of a big bird as its not at all sleek, I mean its quite round/chubby, about 50% bigger than the biggest great tit. And it really likes seed, its been back out 3 times in the last 10-20 mins, its got a very light underbelly, dull very light brown head/ back, gets darker toward back of wings, wings have a white "line" on the outside, fly's ok though.?
Suburds garden, outskirts of belfast, near wooded area (both new and old)
Any ideas what it could be?
Cheers |

| | | Re: Really big finch like small bird chick it was back down at the ground seed feeder this time about 10 mins ago muxt be 8 + times today i've seen it....flies fine...but on the ground it def seems relaxed.... feather seem fine... saw a fairly well developed great tit the other day and one side of the yellow chest seemed ruffled...but fine apart from that....and one of the robins seems strange..we've atleast one healthy looking slimish youngster and 1 or 2 proper adults but theres one youngster who's red seems fairly small and has a tan/brown (almost thrush colours) head |

If it was from a late brood that's quite a normal state to be in.

| | | Re: Really big finch like small bird chick Right..time for me too move furhter on from my noob position... next question
Cleaning a basestation effectively
I imagine I'm going to need a tin hat on for this but here goes
My current cleaning method would be regular hosing and brishing of the base (once every day or 2)
bucket of water (which i'll try and make hot from now on) and a drop of fairly liquid, rinse and dry naturally for metal feeders (about every week)
empty the left over seed every morning
any thoughts on solid, economic way to improve things (dettol?) i've seen some supposed specialised stuff on amazon but i thinks its £6-10 for a small bottle...bear in mind we dont have all the supermarkets that the mainland have over here .... cheers |

| | | Re: Really big finch like small bird chick Not sure on the cleaning of feeders - the missus takes care of all domestic chores (she uses the special animal sprays to clean them) .
Is this like the robin you have, its from the most recent brood of our locals
