| | | Bird sound help please I keep hearing a bird who's sound can I only describe as a squeaky toy like the type a dog would have
I hear it regularly at night but less often in the day (heard it about 30 mins ago - still light). It does seem to come from different directions at night but it could just be something disturbing it as we do get lots of wildlife in the area.
If someone could point me in a possible direction before I start trawling through the rspb sounds section it would be much appreciated
Where we live is surrounded by canal, farmers grazing field, stream, small wood and houses the other side (that really narrows it down )
Cheers,shenk1

| | | Re: Bird sound help please Lapwing would be a good bet. They often feed on farmland (or wetland areas) at night, so if you are near these sort of habitats, or on a flightpath between them, you may well hear them at night. |

| | | Re: Bird sound help please Thanks for the suggestion Roy but it doesn't seem as high pitched as a lapwing.
It is a possible though as we have Old Moor rspb 2 miles away and they get hundreds there but for some reason I have never seen one here
Being a regular visitor I do hear them regular and we are going tomorrow and I'll have a real good listen to the noise they make - and boy do they make a noise
Cheers,shenk1

| | | Re: Bird sound help please Just had another listen on the rspb site to lapwing and the end of the recording is very close. The RSPB: Lapwing
I'll stick my head out of the window tonight if I hear it and try to compare them
It would be strange if it was lapwing (and I think it is) as I have never even seen one fly over the area despite there being hundreds ,sometimes thousands, at Old Moor and the canal links us with it and between us and there it is nearly all fields
Again cheers Roy,its a bird I hadn't even considered

| | | Re: Bird sound help please Try Little Owl. That would be my guess, they can become quite vocal at this time of year and shout at each other quite a lot!

I've just had a quick listen to the recordings of Little Owl on the RSPB site and I don't think that any really fit the calls you describe though - but not because they don't make similar calls!
Try the recordings of Little Owl here (the first couple of recordings by Stuart Fisher may be like the calls you are hearing): xeno-canto/Europe :: bird sounds from Europe :: little owl |

| | | Re: Bird sound help please Thanks for the suggestions
Had a listen but it still sounds more like the lapwing recording (little owl had crossed my mind but it sounded nothing like the rspb recording - the suggested site is now bookmarked )
Didn't hear anything last night as the windows were shut due to it blowing a gale
Unless I hear it again and decide differently I think I will stick with Roys initial idea of Lapwing
Cheers,shenk1
PS any further ideas are more than welcome as I enjoy listening to them anyway
