| | | black heron in essex was taking a family track our roots day out at wormingford in essex, checking the brights cemetary, that sort of thing. my father took me and my son to wormingford mere, whilst walking along the r stour towards the mill, we came across a black heron sitting on the bottom ledge of the mill pond. its the first any of us had seen, how common are they? |

Or it could just have been a normal Grey Heron in shadow- only you know what the light was like at the time.

Have a look at the above thread.
Melanistic Grey Herons do occur but very rarely! Cormorants are often mistaken for black Heron.
Can you describe it's behaviour? Black Stork is another possibility. What colour were the legs and bill? |
