German Kingfisher?

Good afternoon all

Someone asked me a good question this morning and I haven't been able
to find a decent answer yet.Hopefully someone will be able to help!

The Kingfisher's German name is Eisvogel or Ice bird.The questioner told me
it is similar in Hungarian as well.

Why is it so named when,as we found out terribly last winter,ice would seem to be that particular bird's greatest enemy??

I photographed a Kingfisher last winter in the snow and ice on a small stream with iced edges. I suppose the German name comes from the fact that in the winter the birds are confined to the small open areas of water left during a cold spell and are therefore easier to see.
