| | | going to miss our summer visitors :( I have really enjoyed all the birds I've seen this Summer, and all the birdsong.. am going to miss them so much and I dread winter. I went to south stack (anglesey) this summer, saw so many different things.. gannets, razorbills, guillemots, choughs, whitethroat, fulmars, kittiwakes.. I highly recommend a visit there in early summer.
Anyone else feeling a bit sad that winter's coming?? |

| | | Re: going to miss our summer visitors :( Well at least we can look forward to the migratory birds like the geese, redwings, fieldfares, and waxwings ( with a bit of luck). Then the anticipation of spring in all it's glory. So it's not all bad news.... and there's WAB of course for cold winters days and summer memories.

| | | Re: going to miss our summer visitors :( hi susy, yes i feel like you about the 'loss' of our summer visitors and for similar reasons. only yesterday,i noticed the local skies much quieter and realised the house-martins had gone---is this quite early? their numbers were down again this year though at least they managed to rear their young, the only pair of swallows i had, lost both their broods to magpies--and there were no swifts at all.
but..i'll look forward to the winter visitors, yes.
i just didnt want to do so just yet! |

| | | Re: going to miss our summer visitors :( I only just got interested in birdwatching so it's like they're leaving before I got to know them. I dislike winter in general, it really gets me down, but I am looking forward to frosted branches and clear winter skies. There's nothing like a bitterly cold winter day with a bright blue sky. |

| | | Re: going to miss our summer visitors :( yes, you're all very right there, it's not the end of the world lol, we have awesome birds in autumn and winter.. I have yet to see waxwing, I guess it's down to luck with them really, some years they come in their thousands to stuff themselves on berries and other times they stay put where they already are! And we'll have the geese, fieldfares and redwings too, and not forgetting lovely wigeons, pintails etc.. I will miss all the other wildlife though too, seeing all the beautiful dragonflies, butterflies and other insects...and the flowers. must invest in a massive coat this year for winter, that should help! |

| | | Re: going to miss our summer visitors :( Bird wise we are getting into the best time of the year. Autumn is fantastic, I also love winter birding you just never know what you will get. Alot of movement compared to summer. Its best to just adjust you interest depending on the time of year. |

| | | Re: going to miss our summer visitors :( I have to say I love the changes that our seasons bring. The berries, gradually colouring leaves and another series of Autumn Watch (I hope).
From a birding point of view, the summer is not a brilliant time in the garden as the moult and thick leaf growth precludes seeing much. Insects, though, is an entirely different matter - I will miss the moths and hymenoptera.
But having said that I couldn't live in a country that did not have seasons. They make you feel alive.
