Can you put Nyjer seed in a normal seed feeder?

I do have a Nyjer seed special feeder but for months the finches (goldfinch and chafffinch) dont seem interested and

i keep on changing the seed from the feeder to keep it fresh.

They only like the sunflower hearts which are in a normal seed feeder.
So
Can you put Nyjer seed in a normal seed feeder?

I also have a tray thst screws on to the seed feeder and nyjer feeder.

you can but it will come through the gaps and there will be a lot of waste.

Do you have the type with little holes in he plastic sides or the type with smaller feeding holes like the rspb ones?Please enable your cookies

Bigger birds will feed at the rspb ones as the gap is bigger so at least something will tell other birds something is there(we have one with a base and collared doves eat from it).

Above all just wait and see - they will find it eventually and it will be worth the effort

Some like the sunflower,some the nyger/niger/nyjer.Like the spelling its personal choice but some will go for it,its just the bigger birds might point it out to them
Come winter they will be lapping it up.

I first attracted goldfinches to our garden with Nyjer seed in feeders with very small holes - but after a while they decided they preferred sunflower hearts, and rarely take Nyjer seed now.
