| | | bird box loaction This might be a thread that someone has mentioned before , for that i apologise for bringing it up again.
I would love to put a bird box out , problem is im not really sure where abouts i could put it.below is a picture of our back garden the sun hits it most of the day from the right of the picture.any ideas of where i could put one would be humbly recieved.
I am begining to think that its not really a good idea .but again thoughts and suggestions are great
thanks
lee

| | | Re: bird box loaction looking at the photo, there dosent appear to be anywhere really suitable , why not put one on your house wall , outside the window, then if you get some tits in , you will be able to watch them, approx 6ft high, rossy. |

| | | Re: bird box loaction The best thing is Try think long term, could you bolt a couple of 3" posts 2.5 mtr. high to the wall and put good strong trellis Both sides then grow two or three climbers up it a white honey suckle and a couple of Flowering evergreens for shelter. These will give cover and bring in moths and butterflies. Alternatively the same posts, trellis one side and wavny edged timber with 1" spaces on the back or vice versa (only you know what you want) the more solid wavny boards will give immediate cover one side and the gaps access, the 3" gap will give nesting space once the climbers are established.
Try your own variations to suit your taste and sitting room view :-) PS you can place the "sandwich" anywhere up or down the length of the poles if you go up put some nice arched bits in the corners

| | | Re: bird box loaction I installed this birdbox last winter. It has 3 separate compartments, and was situated with the intention of attracting House Sparrows. It is approx 22' off the ground and faces ENE to shelter the occupants from the strongest sun and winds; the eaves of the house also contribute to this.
Sparrows didn't take up residence this year, although some did utilise it for shelter during the harsh weather, as did several Blue Tits. I had installed a very well situated Blue Tit box, so was surprised when a pair took up residence in the middle compartment. They went on to fledge 8 young. A clothes-line post stands out of shot to the left, and this was used by the tits as a halfway stage when bringing caterpillars (often found on fruit trees in my garden) to their brood, and as a song post. My window on the left afforded great views of these foraging/singing activities, which brought great pleasure.
I would certainly recommend the house-wall as a suitable site for a birdbox, as it is often a more practical and safer location. |

| | | Re: bird box loaction thank you for your tips.. even though i mentioned the sun from the right, i forgot to mention it rises from the left of the picture as well so in other words i get the sun most of the day ( thats when its out )
the house wall sounded a good idea i have 3 holes with screws already in there from last owner but the sun is putting me off.. sad to say |

| | | Re: bird box loaction What about the post showing - you could fix a box or two to that. your fences don't look cat-proof, it's surprising what they can walk along so you can't use those. Boxes on the house would be best.

| | | Re: bird box loaction the fence panel would have been my first choice but like you say its not ideal, plus i have rarely seen birds on the feeders there. im going to get another feeder station , plus im going to try the wall of the house with a nest box.I see a blue tit nest in the guttering next door earlier thi year.
the post isnt squirrel proof either so thats a no...
again thank you for your suggestions. |

| | | Re: bird box loaction Sorry to be negative but from your photo I wouldn't recommend putting one anywhere
The other photo of the communal nestbox is a great idea and a possibility for most houses. |
