| | | found baby greenfinch/goldfinch help! hi,
i have found a baby bird and it was near the road so i put it somewhere a bit safer and the parents were around. the parents soon went off so i took it in. scince the shops were closed i couldnt get mealworms to feed it.
i have it in a box now and i dont know what i should do next, can anyone give advice regarding release and care. |

| | | Re: found baby greenfinch/goldfinch help! Just put it in the nearest bit of thick cover and leave it alone - you're actually killing it. It has parents, so it doesn't need your help unless it's about to be squashed/eaten, and if it is then just move it a short distance (within 30 feet) and walk away.
But I'm guessing that after this long it has probably starved to death. |

as to what to do now, put it back outside and see if the parents come back - if they do leave them to it, if they dont take it to a wildlife hospital asap
as to the cats scaring them off with a water pistol is probably the way to go

| | | Re: found baby greenfinch/goldfinch help! It is hard to leave chicks when you think that they need our help, but in truth as has been said it is best to leave well alone. You acted in what seemed the best course of action alas it has made a bad situation worse. We all learn the hard way but in truth nature looks after itself and in most cases there is a reason for the abandonment. Do not feel bad as most have felt the same or in fact done the same as you have, but as has been said next time as hard as it may be leave well alone. It is a hard world at times.

i put it on a branch and it managed to go off with its parents, and it didnt starve. my dad saw it flying around with its parents this morning.
btw there is no point having a go at me for trying to help RKB, i dont know how you are going to get the next generation to like and care for wildlife if when they do something wrong you have a go at them. i was only trying to help!
thanks for all the reply i will know better for next time. |

| | | Re: found baby greenfinch/goldfinch help! Glad your baby bird has managed to rejoin its parents and doing well. I don't think anyone was having a go at you, it is just that many believe that nature will sort itself out and sometimes we do more harm than good by trying to do what we believe is best.
