| | | Help identifying feather
Can anyone identify the bird who lost this feather please?
It is 13 cms long and was a found in a grass field. I am hoping it might be a tawny owl's.
Thanks |

I would say buzzard but then I'm no expert either and I've never plucked a kestrel

It's an inner primary. Remember that about 2 cm will be in the bird, and 13 cm isn't that big anyway. A buzzard inner primary is about 20 cm long (outer primaries over a foot long), and much more finely barred. The kestrel's colour is also very distinctive, expecially the russet hue. Tawny Owls are more lightly barred, more sandy brown in colour, and have a characteristic soft 'furry' surface that you don't see in other birds except owls.

| | | Re: Help identifying feather That was really interesting! I've bookmarked it.
I find feathers really quite difficult, even when you have a pile of feathers to help you guess the species I sometimes find it difficult.
I even once found a whole pair of wings in a field covered in soil and it took me ages to work out that they were heron wings not buzzard wings!

Maybe you should have kept that quiet as I have loads of feathers waiting for I.D.
The links you gave were very helpful. Thank you. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
