We were walking on Thursley Common on Wednesday last week (28 July) and saw a small dark bodied duck with ducklings. I tried to identify it but failed. Any suggestions please? |

was it definately a duck and not a coot/ moorhen? If so, what about a tufted duck, they're small and dark bodied.

mandirin is a possibility, as they nest in hollows of trees, given the location, the female would have been marching them to a near by lake, is there one in the area ? rossy.

Can you describe what the duck looked like? could also be a little grebe (not sure if you get them there though).
Most of the duck here have finished breeding, they certainally dont have any small ducklings. |

Thanks for all your replies, I should have said I am an experienced birdwatcher so know it wasn't another waterfowl. Mandarin interesting, I have seen in Surrey. Having looked at a lot of pictures I think now it WAS a tufted. |

We didn't see any Mandarin on the field meet there a couple of weekends back. The only waterfowl I saw was Mallard, Moorhen, Coot, and Dabchick. There was a dark mallard female with ducklings there then.

I saw a tufted duck with ducklings there last week in the big pond just after the boardwalks you get to from the moat pond. |
