| | | Spoonbills breeding in Norfolk! The BirdGuides website is reporting this afternoon that 4 nesting pairs of Spoonbill at Holkham NNR have raised 6 young with at least 2 further pairs still feeding young. This is apparently the largest UK colony in over 300 years.
Excellent news
In addition up to 17 non-breeding Spoonbills have been reported at Cley NWT reserve in recent weeks.
I also saw one at my local patch in Essex in early June (present for a few days but moved on).
Spoonbill overload following breeding Cattle Egrets in Somerset last year and breeding Purple Heron in Kent and breeding Little Bittern in Somerset this year.
Next up? .... Great White Egret or Squacco Heron?

| | Re: Spoonbills breeding in Norfolk! Excellent news Richard. I remember a pair bred either last year or the one before in Scotland + that was the first record for many, many years. Hope this continues in the coming years.
Not sure what's happened to the Cattle Egrets- they bred 2 consecutive years in Somerset, but haven't seen any info to suggest any breeding this year.
Great White Egret must start breeding here in the next few years. |

| | | Re: Spoonbills breeding in Norfolk! Excellent though not a massive surprise (though still a surprise non-the-less!). I've seen 3 this year in 3 different places (Rutland, Wat Tyler CP and Elmley) without twitching once and I know of 1 knocking round Essex and 2 in North Kent, so they are not uncommon here in the SE this year, but lovely all the same!
In fact perhaps the immatures seen around here could be the young from these nests?

Maybe next year our small corner of SE Essex will have its own mini-colony!
