I can't sort this one out. Whichever it was it was being mobbed by some pretty brave swallows!
It was cruising about tree-top height. Floating in the glide. The tail is saying to me spar but the gizz is saying gos.
I've some other photos I'll upload when I'm not just about to shoot out of the door but have a go in the meantime!

Yes, it's a male Sparrowhawk.
Note the underwing pattern and the size (as well as the square cornered tail that you mention) |

Thanks for the identification. I guess I was hoping it was a local gos but looks like it was coming up big due to actually being quite close.
The pics were with my 300mm + 1.4x TC and looking at the pics again the birds are appearing large in the frame.
Some brave swallows chasing off a sparrowhawk eh!?
