| | | Half a patterned sparrow? Please can anyone tell me why this bird has only half a pattern? It was feeding its young on a house gutter nest in the south coast of Ireland and it also had a very puffed up feathery rump at times. Many thanks Lisa |

| | | Re: Half a patterned sparrow? Evening Lisa, and welcome to WAB!
He looks like this year's young, with adult male feathers/plumage coming through - hence only half-coverage and a rather fluffy appearance.
Take care, Jason |

i think its a bit older than this yrs i may be wrong but it looks like a good bib from the view on the picture whic would indicate an older bird |

| | | Re: Half a patterned sparrow? ...ah, just read that it was feeding young! Not a juv. then. Still, I can't explain the lack of brown coverage on the back area - or why it would fluff-up in Summer.
I hope it isn't ill. |

| | | Re: Half a patterned sparrow? I saw this quite a bit where I went on holiday (where the weather was warm) and was also a bit confused, its presumably either temperature regulation or possibly trying to look bigger to other male sparrows. I also saw sparrows there lying flat on their belly (which I have not noticed before) on paving slabs presumably to enjoy the warmth from the stones.

I hope it isn't ill. | House Sparrows have plain grey/brown rumps, so not sure why the confusion! Steaking is confined to the mantle and scapulars.
Black bill also tells you it's a full adult male.
It might be fluffed up because it has salmonellosis or trichomoniasis, i.e. it's ill. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
