| | | More For ID Please. I was out for a short walk this afternoon and went around the fields just along from my house. The area is open farmland , fields divided by mature native hedging and wide field margins. The crops are wheat and barley. The nearest woods are half a mile away from these fields.
I went specifically to listen to the Skylarks singing, and to see what else I could find.
As well as a number of Skylarks , I saw a flock of about 100 Woodpigeon , lots of House Sparrows in the hedges, Swallows, Greenfinch and Yellowhammers.
The birds I would like ID'd are,
this one , sitting on a telephone wire above a hedge.
Male Linnet ?
Two Greenfinch in a hedge (centre of picture) and a bird above and to the left of the Greenfinch,
Whitethroat ?
Sitting in a large hawthorn bush at the edge of the field (there were quite a few of these)
Whitethroat again ?
There were quite a few of these too, hopping quickly through the hawthorn while feeding. These had a sort of short, chattering alarm call if I got too close.
Willow Warbler ? (no distinctive "chiff-chaff " song, although I hear Chiff Chaffs all the time in the woods just half a mile away).
I apologise once again for the poor quality of my pictures , I'm just learning.
Thanks in advance for any input and ID's |

I did hear the birds in the 4th picture singing but would have to listen to my bird song and call CD's to recognise the song I heard. I've only recently taken up bird watching so have loads to learn.
The birds (pic 4) were hopping around in hawthorn bushes and looked like they were picking insects from the leaves. If I got too close for their liking, they would dart down into the thicker bushy base of the hawthorn, then fly off to the next bush. The flight was jerky and undulating if that helps . |

2. Common Whitethroat
3. Common Whitethroat
4. Willow Warbler
(WW often make a monosybillic contact call this time of year, you wouldn't necessarily hear one sing - further if a juvenile it wouldn't be singing anyway!)
Rossy - although there is a nice bold eyestripe - Wood Warblers have an entirely different shape - like barrel chests - and the undertail coverts come almost to the end of the tail retrices (which are noticeably shorter!). They tend to be much greener on the upper parts too.
compare Wood Warbler Galleriet - Netfugl.dk

| | | Re: More For ID Please. thanks picadie but the second is greenfinch, i just couldnt make out the fourth as was looking at the chest, so if suziandflo had heard the call , to which descends and ends with a flourish it would have confirmed it was a willow warbler indeed, rossy.

That's 3 more "firsts" to add to my list .
rossy , in the second picture , there are 2 Greenfinch. One is in the centre of the picture and the other is up a little and to the right of the centre Greenfinch. The Whitethroat is at the left of the picture , higher in the hedge than the Greenfinch. I've added a copy of picture 2 with a line going from the centre Greenfinch up to the Whitethroat, to help anyone who can't easily find the birds. Hope this helps . . | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
